Strategic Planning Committee
Change is disturbing when it is done to us, exhilarating when it is done by us.

Message from the Chairs, 2006-2007
The Division of Student Affairs is well into utilizing a staff engagement model for long-term planning. The Strategic Planning Committee (SPC), comprised of students and staff from across the Division, is preparing to introduce the Division's next 3 year plan. We adopted a sub-committee framework for conducting the business of the committee. The sub-committees are: Critical Issues, Division Retreat, and Division Initiatives.
The Critical Issues sub-committee continues to refine the departmental goal setting process. This included a managers focus group late last spring semester. Division Retreat sponsored a Division-wide day retreat in February entitled “Scoring the Division Report Card”. Many new ideas and feedback were collected during this engaging session. Finally, the Division Initiatives sub-committee worked on a new component of the strategic plan that addresses major Division-wide initiatives. These new initiatives will be released at the Strategic Plan Rollout at the Division town meeting on September 19th.
Members of the SPC presented our planning model to colleagues at the NASPA/ACPA joint meeting in Orlando in April. The Division continues to receive inquiries from other student affairs organizations about our planning model; the idea that staff from all levels of the organization can be engaged in setting a long-term direction for their organization. The evolution of our process has not come without bumps and plenty of learning, but the model has proven a great success for both the organization and individual members of the committee.
Kanter's quote continues to guide our efforts – and we continue to encourage staff to provide feedback on our process and the long-term outlook for the Division through the website link or through your committee representative.

Message from the Chairs, 2005-2006
The Division of Student Affairs is well into utilizing a staff engagement model for long-term planning. The Strategic Planning Committee (SPC), comprised of students and staff from across the Division, plans to use most of the academic year to continue to collect information and trends on any and all issues that affect our organizational effectiveness. We have adopted a sub-committee framework for conducting the business of the committee. The sub-committees are: Critical Issues, Division Retreat, and Division Initiatives. The sub-committees will progress their charges and the full committee will thoughtfully process information in preparation for the anticipated April 2007 release of the Division's next 3-year strategic plan. Now is the time to pass along feedback. Kanter's quote compels our involvement – we continue to encourage staff to provide feedback on our process and the long-term outlook for the Division through the website link or through your committee representative.

Message from the Chairs, 2006
It has been a productive 10 months for the Strategic Planning Task Force. The “plan” was successfully ‘rolled out’ in April and a formal report submitted in July. The Vice President’s office has accepted the Task Force’s recommendations in full. We sincerely thank the membership of the Task Force for their hard work and dedication to accomplishing an ambitious agenda in a short period of time.
Now we enter a new chapter in this process. The Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) began meeting in September 2005. We welcome new members to our group. Our charge is to lead the continued facilitation of the long range planning process for the Division of Student Affairs. Embedded in this charge is the mandate to promote the idea of mutual accountability in all directions of the organizational chart. Committee members take up the leadership role of the Division’s organizational change and development, but we are not alone in this undertaking. As always, we invite, in fact, need your feedback to insure success in this process. Ask committee members about their work. Explore this web page. Ask questions of us and offer your opinions concerning the
Division. We refer again to Kanter’s wisdom: Change is disturbing when it is done to us, exhilarating when it is done by us.

Message from the Chairs, October 2005
The Division of Student Affairs is moving and changing! Moving forward and changing for the best - and we want you to not only be a part of it, but help direct it. The Division's Strategic Planning Task Force (SPTF) is comprised of representatives from all the Division's departments and is charged with laying the critical foundations for the Division's future: How we organize, operate, behave, communicate, philosophize, and change for the future.
The projected timeline for this process is ambitious: The Task Force hopes to present material to the Division near the end of the spring 2005 semester, so your involvement this semester is key. Use this website as a medium for collecting and sharing information. You can learn of the Task Force's progress and pass along feedback to us. Remember that the website is only one of many ways to communicate about the future of the Division: You can talk with your Task Force rep., pass along information to your department manager, or communicate directly with the Task Force co-chairs.
Kanter's words are very meaningful to our Division and this effort: Change is disturbing when it is done to us, exhilarating when it is done by us. We encourage you to get involved, stay informed and become part of the driving force for Division transformation.
