Student Affairs IT Applications Developer (Search #2008478)
(Computer Programmer/Analyst II, UCP VIII)

The Department of Student Affairs Information Technology is seeking a highly technical and self-motivated Application Developer to analyze, design, develop and maintain web applications for the Division of Student Affairs.

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Lead Applications Developer, the Applications Developer applies considerable expertise and knowledge of computer programming techniques to independently analyze, design, develop and maintain effective computer applications programs for the Division of Student Affairs. The Applications Developer may supervise student workers.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Design program structure and create program code to meet the business needs of the Division of Student Affairs.
  2. Work with users and information technology staff to refine solution models.
  3. Conduct logical analysis of defined Division business needs and recommend solutions or adapt to new requirements. Works with users to refine logical analysis.
  4. Confers with Lead Applications Developer and other department staff to resolve questions of program intent and performance, output requirements and input data acquisition. Devises programmatic design based on discussion and applies it independently to solve problem at hand.
  5. Devises a testing plan for testing programs and to verify proper program performance and efficiency of operation.
  6. Analyze, review, and rewrite programs to increase operating efficiency, correct program errors, or adapt to new requirements.
  7. Assist with the enforcement of Division application development standards.
  8. Assist with the implementation and maintenance of shared code libraries for Division developers.
  9. Assist with necessary documentation and operating instructions for application consultants and users.
  10. Evaluate and develop complex client server approaches in support of Division processes. Assist with analysis and implementation of data warehouse structures and systems.
  11. Collaborate with web managers on user interfaces, application appearance, and application integration into Division web sites.
  12. Collaborate with Division systems and database administrators to create and maintain reliable and responsive web application and database servers.
  13. Actively foster a campus climate that is welcoming and supportive of the University of Connecticut’s diverse student and employee communities, and encourage communication with and among campus constituencies.
  14. Collaborate with other SAIT staff as need to create a functional, reliable, and easy to use desktop and network computer environment.
  15. Implement security best practices during application development activities.
  16. Maintain knowledge of the current practices, trends, and innovations in the field of information technology, particularly related to higher education and student affairs.
  17. Work with vendors to integrate and customize third-party applications into the Division computing environment.
  18. May supervise student workers.
  19. Evening, weekend, or flex hours may be required.
  20. Perform related duties as required.

Department Responsibilities:

  1. Actively foster a campus climate that is welcoming and supportive of the University of Connecticut’s diverse student and employee communities, and encourage communication with and among campus constituencies.
  2. Collaborate with other SAIT staff as need to create a functional, reliable, and easy to use desktop and network computer environment.
  3. Implement security best practices during application development activities.
  4. Maintain knowledge of the current practices, trends, and innovations in the field of information technology, particularly related to higher education and student affairs.
  5. Work with vendors to integrate and customize third-party applications into the Division computing environment.
  6. Evening, weekend, or flex hours may be required.
  7. Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Systems, or five years of programming experience in lieu of a degree.
  2. Two to three years programming experience; this is in addition to the five years programming experience accepted in lieu of a degree.
  3. Evidence of ability to independently analyze and translate assigned specifications into operating programs and prepare detailed program documentation.
  4. Demonstrated ability in analytical reasoning and logical problem solving.
  5. Good written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Fluency in Python or similar dynamic language.
  2. Proficiency in database design and SQL.
  3. Experience in unit testing.
  4. Strong foundation in OO design, MVC framework, and template-based layouts.
  5. Experience working in a UNIX-LINUX environment.
  6. Working knowledge of one of the following: ColdFusion, PHP, or Java Servlets.
  7. Working knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  9. Knowledge of information technology in University and/or Student Affairs environments.
