Student Affairs IT Database Administrator (Search #2008338)
(Database Programmer/Administrator I, UCP VI)
Under the direction of the Lead Systems Administrator, the Database Administrator applies technical expertise and specialized knowledge to the management of database activities in the Division of Student Affairs.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
- Works with system administrators and application developers to implement appropriate systems to meet data management needs.
- Collaborates with vendors, users, and information technology staff to implement and manage databases used by third-party applications.
- Creates and verifies database backups; restore databases from backup media.
- Implements database disaster recovery and high availability procedures to ensure maximum database availability.
- Manages database permissions in conjunction with Active Directory policies.
- Creates, loads, reorganizes, alters, deletes, secures, and otherwise maintains files, databases, tables, indexes, stored procedures, functions, triggers, and other related objects in Division database environments.
- Implements physical databases and file structures.
- Monitors data transfer jobs and database server log files; takes appropriate action to resolve problems.
- Monitors database system, operating system, and hardware performance; recommends modifications to improve performance.
- Documents and enforces naming conventions and standards for database structures and database utilities.
- Works with system administrators, application developers, and users to test and then apply database system patches and perform major system upgrades throughout the database infrastructure.
- Evaluates and recommends the purchase of database administration support software.
- Collaborates with information technology staff to create a functional, reliable, and easy to use desktop and network computer environment; works with information technology staff and others to assess the information technology needs of the Division of Student Affairs.
- Provides support to the development and testing of Division disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
- Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the current practices, trends, and innovations in the field of information technology, particularly related to higher education and student affairs.
- Actively foster a campus climate that is welcoming and supportive of the University of Connecticut’s diverse student and employee communities, and encourage communication with and among campus constituencies.
- Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Five years of technical database administration experience will substitute for a bachelor’s degree.
- Three to five years of progressively responsible technical database administration experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to maintaining state-of-the-art technical knowledge.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented, fast-paced information technology environment.
- Ability to work flexible or off-shift hours.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or 2005, including performance tracing, query optimization, stored procedure creation, database to web application support, and management best practices.
- Experience working in a large corporate or education setting.
- Experience with MySQL and Oracle database management.
Starting salary is in the low to mid $50’s and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package is included.
