Student Activities

Job Summary:

Under the direction of designated administrator, advises and provides support, as well as leadership training and development to student organizations who are integrated into the student organizational structure.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinates all programs in assigned area of responsibility, which may from time to time include major undertakings which require extensive planning, negotiation, problem solving and follow-through.
  2. Advises and assists assigned student group(s) in planning and managing their policies, programs and general operations, in accordance with University policies and procedures, state statutes, and the guidelines and rules of the legally authorized governing body; such matters include program and policy development, goal setting, fiscal and risk management, maintenance of legal records and documents, personnel matters, recruitment, public relations and marketing, academic standards, disciplinary codes and other applicable issues.
  3. Is responsible for thorough knowledge of applicable policies, regulations and laws; monitors compliance with and provides guidance regarding such policies, regulations and laws.
  4. Serves as a resource to assigned student group and their advisors s; develops and oversees the implementation of leadership and organizational training programs and advisor support and recognition programs.
  5. Maintains regular contact with student leaders to resolve problems and develop responsible decision-making. Assess student interests, respond to student needs, anticipate student programming / leadership issues.
  6. Identifies goals and resources necessary to promote the effectiveness of the groups.
  7. Acts as a liaison with other University and external groups, including the academic departments in which some organizations are embedded, and organizations’ governing bodies s (if applicable).
  8. May supervise student staff and an assistant.
  9. May be responsible for one or more services or programs which serve the department as a whole.
  10. Participates in overall department activities, such as evaluation and development of overall programs and policies, outreach programs or promotional activities and special events; recommends improvements or changes to increase effectiveness or meet changing needs.
  11. Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in appropriate field.
  2. Three to five years professional experience in a responsible position related to student personnel, counseling or similar work which demonstrates knowledge of leadership development programs and the assigned student group(s) OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  3. Excellent leadership, organizational and programming skills
  4. Excellent interpersonal, counseling and communication skills
  5. Willingness to work irregular and flexible hours.
  6. Familiarity with state and local policies, procedures, regulations and laws pertaining to student group(s)
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of budgeting and fiscal management.
  8. Demonstrated ability to actively foster a campus climate that is welcoming and supportive of University of Connecticut’s diverse student body and encourages communication with and among campus constituencies.

Other Desirable Qualifications/Skills:

  1. Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration or other related field.
  2. Demonstrated responsible oversight of a comprehensive student organization/campus-wide involvement program.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing, implementing, and supporting student development/leadership training programs.
  4. Demonstrated experience with risk management strategies
  5. Demonstrated experience with assessment techniques.
  6. Demonstrated effective planning, organization, budgeting, and administrative skills.
  7. Knowledge and familiarity with the use of personal computers and basic software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  8. Willingness to work irregular and flexible hours.
  9. Demonstrated experience with and ability to effectively manage multiple projects and programs.
